Tackling Stigma. Advancing Rights

At Twogere, we address mental health stigma and discrimination, recognizing that stigma often poses a greater barrier to care than the mental health conditions themselves. The World Health Organization identifies stigma as a primary obstacle to accessing mental health services globally. In Uganda, more than 85% of individuals with mental health conditions remain untreated, predominantly due to stigma, misinformation, and social exclusion.

This issue extends beyond public health, representing a critical human rights concern. The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities explicitly prohibits discrimination against individuals with psychosocial or intellectual disabilities, affirming their right to equal treatment and inclusion.

Our anti-stigma interventions have engaged over 100,000 young people across schools and community settings through evidence-based workshops and Social Contact events. These interventions are designed to reduce discriminatory attitudes, increase mental health literacy, and promote inclusive social environments that uphold the dignity and rights of young people living with mental health conditions.

“Nearly 9 in 10 people living with mental health conditions report that stigma and discrimination have negatively impacted their lives.”

Our Approach

At Twogere, we believe that the most powerful way to reduce mental health stigma is by centering the voices of those with lived experience. Evidence shows that meaningful, direct interaction with individuals who have experienced mental health conditions leads to greater empathy, reduced prejudice, and lasting attitude change.

By embedding lived experience into our campaigns and educational programs, we do more than raise awareness—we foster understanding, challenge stereotypes, and promote a culture of dignity and respect.
