James’ Story

Creating Mentally Healthy Classrooms

James, a high school teacher in Kampala, had always been concerned about the mental well-being of his students. He had noticed a few of them exhibiting signs of stress, anxiety, and depression, particularly during exam periods, but he wasn’t sure how to help them. He felt unsure of how to provide the support his students needed, as mental health was not something widely discussed in his school.

That changed when James participated in a Mental Health First Aid training organized by Twogere. The training equipped him with the knowledge and tools to identify early signs of mental health struggles, respond appropriately, and guide students towards the help they needed.

I knew something was wrong with some of my students, but I didn’t know how to address it. After the training, I feel like I can help,” Mr. James shared. “I can see the signs now, and I know how to approach it without making them feel embarrassed or uncomfortable.”

The training helped James create a safer and more supportive environment in his classroom. He became the go-to teacher for students dealing with mental health challenges. One student, in particular, had been struggling with anxiety and had been isolating himself. After James used the skills he learned in the training to approach him, the student opened up about his struggles and eventually sought counselling.

"I feel so much better knowing I can make a difference,” James said. “It’s a huge responsibility, but it’s also incredibly rewarding to see how my students are thriving when they feel supported.”
