Omwisiki is a Runyankore word meaning "a girl". It is a special initiative by Twogere that addresses the critical issue of violence against girls in schools and communities. In many parts of Uganda, girls face alarming levels of violence, including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, both at home and in their educational environments. These violations often go unreported, leading to long-term physical, psychological, and social consequences.
Our focus Areas
1
Prevention of Violence Against Girls
The primary objective of Omwisiki is to prevent all forms of violence against girls in schools and communities. Through targeted awareness campaigns, we educate communities about the types of violence girls face and the negative consequences of such abuse.
2
Capacity Building for Educators and Community Leaders
We equip teachers, parents, and community leaders with the skills and knowledge to identify, report, and respond to instances of violence. Regular workshops and training sessions build capacity in recognizing the signs of abuse, offering appropriate support to victims, and creating a safe space for girls to speak out.
3
Promoting Creative Arts as a Tool for Healing and Expression
One of the unique elements of Omwisiki is the use of creative arts as a tool for both prevention and healing. Through drama, dance, poetry, and visual arts, girls are encouraged to express their emotions and experiences. These creative outlets not only provide a form of therapy but also raise awareness in the community, engaging a wider audience in the conversation about violence against girls
